Umutomboko Ceremony

The Mutomboko is a traditional ceremony of the Lunda tribe that happens on the last saturday of July each year. Originally, the celebration was performed by dancing and drinking beer after a battle with their enemies. But as time went by, and wars and battles became obsolete,  the Mutomboko celebration became a distant memory.

In 1971 to mark the tenth anniversary of the instalment of Mwata Kazembe XVII Paul Kanyembo Lutaba (whose photograph appears at the right of the page) it was made an official annual ceremony. It includes dances symbolising the migration of the Luba-Lunda and the conquest of the Luapula valley by the first chiefs.
